The best way to get an internship! part 1

The best way to get an internship!
Would you like to know the best way to get a good internship? Yeah me too but it is not that simple. Took me a few months of searching to get one. Well as I already said, I cannot tell you the best way to search for an internship but I can tell you how I did it and perhaps give you some helpful tips and perhaps some other students can comment some additional tips below….. In this first part I will give you some basic tips and one of my personal experiences during my search for an internship.

Before you apply
For a start I would say you should think of all the companies which catch your interest. So just think of all the cool brands or industries you like. You should also think of the type of jobs you are looking for, what you want do learn and in which country or region you want to do it. Big companies might sound good on your CV but the smaller ones could perhaps give you a better insight into the firm and make your tasks more important. Furthermore, I would say try to see this as a  real job instead of just a school assignment because you never know if they will be asking you to work for them after you finished your HES studies.

My first steps
Personally, my priorities was to find an Asian company so one of the first things I did was was making a list of interesting companies in Asia. I also started working on updating my  CV and Cover letter. This was more work than I expected, so get that stuff sorted out on time! When I finished my CV and basic set up for my Cover letter I thought it was pretty good. But after some time it turned out that it could be improved on quite a few points. So my advice is to ask as many people with some more experience for their opinion but still try to put your own style in it. (yeah I know I am not a professional in this area this was my first real CV, normally I get asked for jobs or create them myself hehe).

Mailing Mailing Mailing
Than it all started I was sending my CV and Cover letter to lots of companies but most of them are pretty fucked up and never replied to my emails. This brings me to my first advise, do not wait for a reply but just keep on sending your applications to more and more and more firms. The ones who are interested will most of the time reply within one or two days. Other than that, there are more ways to contact companies other than by email or online forms. For example, I couldn’t find the right email address for some companies and decided to sent them a letter by old fashion post. Here as well from all the 15 companies I mailed only one mailed back that they where impressed by my CV and would look for opportunities in their Hong Kong office. A month later they still did not find an opportunity… Yeah at some points finding an internship really SUCKS!

Good experience
I was already in Asia so after a while I thought instead of mailing them that I could visit their office tomorrow why not just visit them today. So I did I went to a marketing firm in Shanghai and explained that I was looking for an internship. At first the woman I talked to was saying they already had some interns from Singapore and there would probably not be enough work to hire another intern. However, we did a kind of interview and said she would directly discuss it with the other directors. She returned with the same news she had given me at the start and thanked me for coming. OK THAT SUCKS, but at least I got a direct and clear answer and they took me serious. Well, apparently she did like me because an hour later I received an email with contact info of three other Chinese marketing companies (not just the HR department but real people). I emailed them they all responded in a few hours which alone was awesome already! However, after a few emails it turned out they couldn’t hire me either. But again they did have a close look to my files so I would definitely recommend you just to go to the company of your interest and ask them for the job! Make sure you are prepared, proper clothing, knowledge about the company and have your CV and cover letter ready.

This was just the beginning of my experience and advice on finding an internship. Part 2 will follow. I finally got an internship so there is a happy ending to this story and the best is yet to come! So keep on checking out iStudyatHES.com

HES exchange at Korea University Business School (Seoul)

<br />

First impression

.
My first weeks in Korea have been crazy I don’t know where to start but it sure has been great! The introduction week at Korea University Business School included seven nights of non stop partying with other mostly European exchange students and Korean students from a special buddy program. This buddy program includes that every exchange student will be connected with a local Korean student who helps to settle in Seoul. This is a pretty good system but some people like me never got a buddy. The party scene in Seoul is incredible lots of clubs and Koreans sure drink lots of beer and cheap Korean 20% shots of Soju. Clubs are good well perhaps not as good as the iStudyAtHES party but sure good and pretty expensive too most of them charge about 20 euro entrance but every last Friday of the month its club night which means you can go to several clubs for just 10 euro. The drinks inside remain expencive and you may pay at least 5 euro for a 33cl bottle of beer. In general most things are cheaper compared to Amsterdam, restaurants are definitely cheaper but the supermarkets can’t beat the Aldi. However, the main supermarkets are a lot bigger than in Amsterdam and offer millions of free food samples.

The University

The university looks like an old castle with the only difference that its brand new. From the inside its even better, a good friend of me in Amsterdam is from Argentina and I remember him being amazed about the fact that we have flat screens and elevators inside HES Amsterdam building. Over here I got the same feeling, they have got flat screens as well only than 7 next to each other, special University metro stop, free bus to travel around campus, sport complex, on campus Starbucks and lots of 24 hour seven eleven type of shops, several libraries, waterfall, fountain, after school activity clubs etc etc. Other than that, check out the picture of the classrooms they are definitely much better than those inside HES Amsterdam. Still not impressed? check out the Korea University Business School Trailer

.

Courses

It might all sounds like lots of partying but we sure have to study as well. Korea University offers lots of interesting courses. In the first week we where able to follow any class and decide whether to take it or not. Through this system you are capable of selecting only the best subjects or you can just only look at the dates and fit them all into two days of the week. Personally, I followed 11 courses in the first week just to make sure which where the best ones and I definitely ended up with a good set of courses. For example I’m doing new trends in marketing where we will be working on a real case presented by a team of LG health care and every single week there will be another professor presenting a special topic which has to do with our assignment for LG. Other courses sometimes are thought by professors which might not be that good in English but the overall level seems to be good. Attendance at Korea University Business School is very strict some courses already deduct points after missing one single class. On the other hand, participation is heavily rewarded and most of the time consist of 10% of the final grade.
.

Costs

The first weeks are costing me lots of money like for example bedding, mobile phone, school books, immigration application, insurance, basic stuff for the room etc… These are just start up costs after this I guess I’ll be spending around 10 to 15 euro per day on food and drinks.
The great metro system of Seoul allows you to travel all around town for about 1 euro. People in the metro are either sleeping or watching TV on their mobiles. About the mobiles, it has a totally different network than back in Europe. They haven’t got Sim cards which means your European number is not working and you have to buy a new phone. From which prices for a second hand model vary between 20 and 50 euro. Phones and other stuff can be bought at some of the mega big indoor shopping malls from which some are opening their doors till five in the morning.
.

Housing

I’m living in CJ International House which is located on campus and just a few minutes walking distance from lots of restaurants and pubs. I’m staying in a single room sharing the apartment with three French guys which is lots of fun. The only two main disadvantages about the CJ international house are that the ladies stay on a different floor as the men and that its strictly forbidden two enter each others floors. A single room at CJ international House costs 2.000.000 won (1.275 euro) per semester. You can easily find cheaper or less strict accommodation after arrival but it definitely is worth it to live with so many fellow exchange students. And most of them live in CJ because the information you receive before departure makes you believe this is the only realistice option you’ve got.
.
This definitely is the best exchange location I could imagine. And in case you wanna know more don’t worry I will post some other stories about my experience and live in Seoul during this semester.
.
We would like to invite all students who are on exchange or have been on exchange to write their exchange story and help new exchange students to make their decision.
Mail your story to exchange@istudyathes.com
