Graduating at HES Amsterdam

What is graduating at hes like?

MichaelLeveringFinally arrived at hes, and when you stand in front of that building you realise that it might be the last time you will ever see it…. haha how great is that! Four years of hard working, just to experience this important day! That’s all I did it for!

The Graduation Ceremony started with a small reception, with coffee and tea. Here all the people gathered together. The nice thing is that you see the people again after a year of exchange periods and internships.

And there they were, the people I missed for months; those I used to drink with, hang out with, get bored with, make fun with, cheat at exams with (hehe, just kidding), relax with, present with, study with, Yes, honestly I had to work of course, well at least read the books to know what the subjects were about, get mock exams and study it, write some stuff at exam papers and get at least the minimum of 5.5.

Unfortunately you don’t see all the people at the reception that I would wanted to see. Not everyone made it in four years.

After the reception we walked to the “North Serre” where a stage and a large beamer were installed. The moment you enter the “North Serre” you get that feeling of doing your first presentation ever, sooo nervous. No one knows what is going to happen. You can see everybody being excited and nervous at the same time.

Then Ms. Vila Roches (the Spanish teacher) opened the Graduation Ceremony where soon Mr. Resing took over to speech about studying and stuff like that. After Mr Resing’s speech the students had to go forward and pick up their diploma, one by one.

Hey… and here is the moment for YOU to watch the videos we added at the website under the “tab” videos…. that’s what happens next!

Lucky me I had to pick up my diploma and Peter Fonkert (my dissertation-guide) gave a speech about me, and I got a present! Nice!) Next, other students picked up their diploma and the teachers Mr. Weaver and Mr. Moosa gave a short speech or asked questions or made some jokes.

After all speeches went to another room inside school were everyone could get drinks and snacks.

And then!

YEESSSS finally done with HES! Yesyesyesyes…..Finally I can say: bye bye HES hasta la vista!

DAM tot DAM by night and by day

DAM tot DAM by night and by day

editielogoCongratulations to all of those who have run the DAM tot DAM (16km from AmsterDAM until ZaanDAM). This race is organized every year since the last 25 years so this time to celebrate there was a “by night” version where more than 25.000 people participated, it is the biggest sport event of the year (according to RTV-NH).

.

nico-webI, Nico, ran for the first time ever the 16,1 km and even though it’s not half marathon, it is still quite long. I trained regularly for the last 2 months so I was ready for it.  At the beginning while going through the tunnel everybody had a pretty quick pace and seriously everybody passed me… anyways, later on I realized who trained and who didn’t because everybody seemed to be pretty exited at the beginning but around km 5 there were already people quitting and those who passed me were already exhausted.

I finally made it in 1 hour and 22 minutes, speed average of almost 12km p/h and ended up in position 1997 out of 25.000. Pretty good huh?

On Sunday 20, it was the “day” version where another 35.000 people participated.  Of course, as every year, the Kenyans made it to the podium by running the 16km in 50 min and won 5000 euros. Not bad huh? Many companies also participated by representing themselves. UvA and HvA were there too. They invested 20.000 euros in this event (according to FOLIA) and not many students knew about it since until a week ago they were still offering free spots. I went to the official HvA tent in the VIP-Business Loop in Zaandam and I talked around with some runners and there was NOBODY from HES. Lame. hva-lame-tentAnyways, let’s see if next year they invest a bit more in promotion like buying a banner in this website??? Just saying…

Congrats again to all those HES students that trained and paid the inscription by themselves and enjoyed the biggest running event in Europe (Nu.nl).

I’m doing it next year again, wanna join??

Questionnaires

Hey you guys!

Last week I received lots of emails from the HES/HvA with questionnaires asking for my opinion about all sorts of HES related stuff. Of course the HES would not be the HES if half of them was not applicable to me but I did fill most of the questionnaires because i study at hes.

Sure it will cost you a little of your precious time but I know all you guys are complaining about everything but never to the right person. SO TAKE YOUR CHANCE, FILL IN THESE QUESTIONNAIRES and help to improve the quality of the HES.

By the way, there is one about Sorbon so you can actually tell Sorbon all about your good and bad experience. Do you remember one of the early days iStudyatHES.com discussions about Sorbon?

Other than that, remember the following:

Undercover Economist

Undercover Economist

This is another book review at iStudyatHES.com and today I tell you about the Undercover Economist which is probably my favorite economics book! Sure you are probably not thinking of reading any non required economics books with the exams coming next month (at least I’m not) but perhaps you might be interested to check this after passing everything!

Well we are all HES students studying lots of Economics right? Well in this book The Undercover Economist, Tim Harford explains lots of business stuff happening in daily life. Lots of stuff which sounds pretty logical and easy but you just would not think of it yourself. Do you know who really benefits from immigration? Why the mafia is making more money with laundries than street gangs do with selling drugs? Why should a company sell a new printer which cost more to produce cheaper than a model which is cheaper to produce? Basically this book looks at familiar situations in unfamiliar ways.

Have fun reading!

YEN Market Fair

YEN Market Fair

Yeah, it is almost time for the one and only HES Amsterdam Market Fair!

Next Wednesday the HES building will be full with first year IBMS, IFM, IM, TMA and IBL students will be promoting their fresh companies trying to sell you all sorts of stuff. So my advice is to stay in bed a little longer.

No just kidding go and check out all the stands and see what kind of funky, weird or cool products they came up with this year. In the past I have seen all sorts of products from tea, T-shirts and weird magnets to organizing parties and last year they where even selling condoms in the HES Amsterdam!

Hope to see some good stuff this year!

.
The market fair is next Wednesday 18th of March from 09:15 to 12:30
.
In case you want to advertise your company and website on iStudyatHES.com
let us know because we have a special offer to promote YEN project groups.
