I, Nicolas Griffioen, 3rd year IBMS student currently on exchange in Brighton UK just won the contest “Host with the most orignal” by Adidas and MTV Europe. This contest was held through the adidas Facebook page. What I had to do was watch the adidas Orignal commercial and then answer a super easy multiple choice question (I think it was which football players appears in the commercial, and it was obvious that it was Beckham) and finally I had to write in 60 words why I consider myself original. I dont quite remember what I wrote since I just put the first thing it came to my mind but something like: “I’m half argentinean, half dutch, I love to houseparty and have the best international friends” and something else…
And YES! I won. I’m the most original person in Europe according to adidas and MTV!! hahahahaha. The prize includes invitation to 60 of my friends, 1 pair of sneakers and 1 t-shirt for EVERYBODY!! yeah, crazy! Free drinks, I can choose the music I want, official MTV DJ and some celebrity might show up.
This is for sure the best year of my life so far! Going on exchange rocks!

Newspaper the Telegraaf wrote on January 20 2009 that security personnel will be attending the next exam at the Leeuwenburg. Why? Last exam period some first year students got angry after being caught on cheating during their exam. So next time you get caught take it easy you might be in some serious trouble…
YES, HES Amsterdam students are all around doing everything all the time. In this case we have Marlen that this sunday 21st September made it to the finish after running 16,1 km from Amsterdam to Zaandam in just 1hr 35 minutes which is pretty good considering that she studies business at HES… she won a participation medal (see picture).

The best dutch runner was Martin Lauret who arrived 10th (47 min 12 sec). The Ethiopian together won more than €30.000 euros in prizes.
I was checking some websites this weekend when I found something incredible. There is one university in Germany, Furtwangen University, that made a video clip to promote their school. After you watch that video you can’t deny that you wanna go and study in that school… well, at least it looks like a lot of fun.
This video was made by 6 german students that came up with the idea and now they challenge other universities to do it too. The video consist of only one shot, no cuts allowed. Perhaps we could do something, our school looks good for a video… but who can do it? can you? I’m gonna show this video to the big boss of the HvA and perhaps he gives some money to finance it but anyways there’s gotta be some know-how too.
Ok, too much bla bla bla, now watch the video:
This is the website of the group that made the video: http://universitylipdub.com/
Google Chrome is the new internet browser that Google launched 3 days ago. Perhaps you don’t even care about the browser but it is really important. So far we have Internet Explorer (IE), Mozilla FireFox (FireFox) and Safari which are the most known programmes. IE is the most used by default, almost every computer has the IE already installed and users tend to use it (and Safari comes in any Apple PC). Anyway, for those that still don’t know about the other options, you can download FireFox and now Chrome.
.
Firefox is one of the best browser so far. It is more secure, complete and faster than any other browsers at the moment. Safari is cool too but not many applications are compatible to its coding.
.
Google Chrome came to kill IE. Actually every other browser company hates IE. They all want to reduce the market share of IE which rocks the market with 76% since early ‘90 (click to enlarge image). Chrome is a mixture of Safari and FireFox. These companies actually collaborated with Google to create a better browser. Chrome looks pretty good. It is actually faster that FireFox but it still lacks standard features like the stop button or history, etc. I’m running it right now in my PC and it goes way faster than FireFox and of course of IE. The URL windows is combined with google search engine, so you can just write the term you want and it’ll get the results right there.
Chrome is a beta version but if this is beta, we can expect way more sophisticated stuff for the complete version. I like it, but I still use FireFox too… you should download it and give a shot, it’s for free!
Unbelievable but true, the sun shone for one more time in this sucky Dutch summer and this is NEWS! If you stayed in Holland during the “summer” you know that it rained every weekend, that it was cold and that the sun harly showed up.
Now that the autumn is almost over us, God gave us a nice weekend. Thanks for that.
Anyways, Bloemedal and Vondelparkt were one of the best places to be as well as Museumplein. Full of people, girls on bikini (lot of hot ones) and some people doing sports.
A little bit caotic to come back with the car, bus or train, but well, it was probably the last chance to enjoy the weather (meteorologically speaking last weekend was the last one of the summer).
Today is rainy as usual. Get used to it! (didn’t we already!?)
The value of the euro against the dollar has dropped to its lowest point in 6 months. Is this good or bad for HES Amsterdam students?
In case you are a non European exchange student you will have the benefit of buying your euros cheaper than before. On the contrary, the regular students who do their exchange program outside the EU will be paying more for the foreign currency. Other regular students will probably not see the short direct effects. However, the main question still remains: is the euro going to drop even further or will it soon be raising sky high again?
Look at the effects of these changes with an example below:
Let’s say you are an exchange student spending 750 euro per month in Amsterdam. This means in four months time you will be spending 3000 euro. Exactly one month ago you would have paid 4776 dollar where you pay only 4408 dollar today. Yeah that is 368 dollar for free. But again this is the other way around in case that a Dutch student goes abroad this semester.
The only thing you have to figure out is whether it is smart to buy/sell all the euros for your exchange program now and put them on a local bank account or to wait a little and hope that the euro will fall/rise again. What do you think is the best thing to do? What would you do? What did you do?
From today onward it is not possible to use the OV kaart anymore until the 16 of August. The only thing you can get is discount of 40% on any ticket . BE CAREFUL!! if you don’t have a valid ticket, you’ll get a fine of €35 plus the cost of the ticket. If that happens to you, I’d try to negotiate with the controller but most of the time they have no mercy.
It is pretty lame that we can’t use this card during the summer, because it doesn’t matter that it is summer, I’m still student and I still don’t have money to pay the tickets… right???
.
Well, not really, but HES Amsterdam students go to see Nelly Furtado! Here Sol will tell us how Nelly Furtado performed at Westerpark Festival.
Last Friday 4th of July Nelly was here at the Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam! The weather was pretty good so with a very nice evening sun we were enjoying the concert of Nelly Furtado! Most of the songs came from her last album “Loose” with the hits “Maneater”, “All good things (come to an end)” but as well some old once like “Forca”, and “I’m like a bird”.
To be honest, before I went to the concert I had my doubts about her live performance but I can tell ya, yes she does sing! Although she had some problems with getting the crowd going, which was probably due to the fact that the age of the crowd was between 20 and 60 years old, still it was a very good performance and it was definitely worth that to pay €45 for the concert.
This is another cool thing about Amsterdam, the greatest and most famous artist always come to Amsterdam such as Coldplay, Madonna, Lenny Kravitz, Justin Timberlake, Snoop Dog, P.Diddy and many more!
Thnx Sol for the info! Check out the pictures below!
